The Gambling Awareness Trust are delighted to see AIB introduce this new initiative where customers can put a voluntary block on card payments to gambling operators.
This block can be used by both personal and business customers and is designed to support anyone affected by harmful gambling. We were happy to collaborate with AIB on this initiative, providing information and guidance on how vulnerable customers can be supported when they are experiencing difficulties with gambling.
On behalf of AIB, we worked with our service providers across the country who surveyed their clients asking for feedback on how banks could help if a person needed support in relation to their gambling. Feedback from those in treatment told us that having the ability to stop their card being used for gambling would be a huge step in taking control of their situation. Many people suggested it would be easier to approach their bank if they thought they would receive a supportive response and that it would give them more autonomy over their finances. The hidden nature of gambling addiction and the stigma associated often means people don’t reach out to friends or family for help. It can be difficult to divulge the extent of the problem and to overcome feelings of guilt and shame.
AIB have demonstrated their commitment to support their customers who need that support, and we believe this will be a hugely effective means for people to use. Our Brand Ambassador Oisin McConville believes this is an excellent support for people and commends AIB for bringing this initiative forward and would like to see other financial institutions implement similar measures.
Referring customers to our support website GamblingCare.ie is another measure which will help customers get the information and advice on the many supports available across the country, in-person specialist counselling, residential programmes, phone supports and online sessions are available to meet the varied needs of those seeking help.
